I’ve wanted this picture since I first saw the hummingbirds show up when the phlox did.
I knew in my head what I wanted the pic to look like but whenever I snapped the pic the hummingbird flitted away to the next bloom as they’re wont to do. I have a lot of pictures of phlox with blurry smudges, even in burst shooting mode.
Then I figured out that I needed to be ready when the phlox was just beginning to bloom so the hummingbird had limited flitting options. I waited til the next year and as soon as the first hummingbird showed up I ran out and sat on the steps using my knee as a tripod and waited. As expected, the hummingbird returned for more phlox juice and I got my pic!
